Teach & Learn with WiscNet: WiscNet eduroam Service

Join us virtually at 10 a.m.
on Wednesday, March 25,
to learn about eduroam:
a better way to Wi-Fi

This image features a cellphone on top of an illustrated globe, and includes the WiscNet and eduroam logos. On the cellphone is the Wi-Fi screen that shows the user connected to the eduroam Wi-Fi

A better way to Wi-Fi has made its way to Wisconsin.

eduroam (education roaming) — a simple, secure roaming access service developed for the research and education community — is more secure than commercial hotspots, public WiFi, web browser forums and other open networks. And that's only one of its benefits.

Right now, millions of students, teachers, researchers, and staff from libraries, schools, and museums are automatically connecting to the internet in more than 10,000 locations across the globe with eduroam. Dual-enrolled students going back and forth between campuses, teachers working in multiple buildings, researchers or faculty spending the day at the library, even foreign exchange students arriving at the residence halls for the first time — so many of them are staying connected to the internet wherever they go and without having to enter credentials every time they move to a new location.

Sounds convenient, right? We want to welcome your organization into the eduroam community. WiscNet is taking the lead on turning this roaming Wi-Fi service into a powerful statewide resource — but we need your help!

Whether you've already taken first steps to adopt eduroam or this is your first time hearing about it, we would love to invite you to attend this virtual session, which is included in your WiscNet membership. (Speaking of “included” — eduroam is also included in your WiscNet membership for the next three years!)

In this session, you'll hear from:

WiscNet's Rich Turiel, chief technology officer, and John Pederson, director of innovation and strategy, will explain eduroam and answer any of your questions. Rich and John are excited about the potential of eduroam and what it can do for WiscNet members. Below, read a little bit from Rich about why he’s passionate about expanding this Wi-Fi service:

"What excites us most at WiscNet about eduroam is how it removes barriers to access and opens the door to connection everywhere. We see a future where Wisconsin's students, educators, and researchers can stay connected seamlessly across campuses, libraries, and public spaces throughout the state. That kind of statewide connectivity means learning and collaboration are not limited by location or circumstance." –Rich Turiel, Chief Technology Officer at WiscNet

Join us at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 25, to see how far you can roam with eduroam.

Can’t make it? Register anyway! We record each of our Teach & Learn events (when we are able) and share the recording a few days afterward.

Want to plan ahead? We always have a lot of great WiscNet events on the calendar, both in person and online. Visit our homepage for WiscNet events for more information.

Have an idea for a future Teach & Learn? We'd love to hear it. These sessions are meant for you, so your input is valuable. Click this Google Form link to submit a topic idea you'd like us to consider.

As always, we look forward to teaching and learning alongside the rest of the WiscNet community. See you online!
